I haven’t posted in a while, but I backkkkkk. I haven’t really been feeling like myself but this book was wonderful nonetheless.
Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this is a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl’s struggle for justice
THUG was written by Angie Thomas, and was inspired by the Black Lives Matter Movement. The message that this book spreads is phenomenal and is so impactful.
Please go and read this book. This was such an eye-opener and was so heartbreaking. What was even more heart breaking is that the content of this book, and other horrific cases like it, happen in people’s daily lives and this is still happening today in the 21st century.
This book had me weeping the entire way through, and it has changed my perception on so many things, I can’t believe it.
As well as the message spread, THUG had such a beautiful writing technique and the main character, Starr, had a wonderful voice throughout the book. I love the way that in this book everything is questioned, and Starr questions everything.
She has amazing parents, who are so incredibly good and kind, it honestly made me weep at parts. They were so incredibly supportive and one of the best YA parents. It was another wonderful aspect of the book. All the characters in this book were hilarious and wonderful and,,,,,,,,,,,,,, words cannot describe how brilliant they were.
The way that this book combats stereotypes is outstanding. It was a constant theme throughout the book and it just amplified even more the message that Angie Thomas is spreading from this novel.
I can’t say much more without including spoilers, so I’m going to leave it at that. If you haven’t already, please go and read this book, as it really is a worthwhile read.
This book is now automatically one of — if not the — most influential books I’ve read this year, if not ever. If you want, discuss with me in the comments!
If not, see you next post

Thank you! Honestly, it really is a great read and would actually be great for that age range and really make students think about the topics discussed in a different way rather than just discussing it.
