A BOOK THAT STOLE MY SOUL: THIS SAVAGE SONG.

HEY.

DID YOU LIKE MY PUN. #punny

Where do I even begin with this book.

I’m going to try avoiding the phase “why didn’t I read this book sooner.”

The August loving kind.

From the very beginning I fell in love with August. He’s just one of those characters that you can’t help but love and want to just hug until everything is better. His character is one of the biggest focuses in the book and his emotions and thoughts are portrayed SO WELL.

Right now we’re talking Gansey-level love. Even Will Herondale-level love.

I AM NOT SAYING THIS LIGHTLY.

YEP. this actually happened. I have gone absolutely mad. I’m ok with it.

In the beginning I thought that Kate was such a bitch.

I really hated her. I saw where it all came from but I still hated her guts. BUT BY HALF WAY I started to actually like her and she was actually a great character.º #DEVELOPMENT!

THERE WERE SO MANY MEAN GUYS I LOVED IT. V.E SCHWAB CAN WRITE VILLAINS I TELL YOU.

My mini mind was blown into 50,000 pieces.

ºShe’s actually one of the strongest, kick-ass characters ever!

The book didn’t start off slow, like I thought that it would. I don’t know why, but my expectations for this book was that I wouldn’t get into it, like A Darker Shade of Magic, but IT WAS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE.

I couldn’t stop reading it. I think that the amazing world building and the strong characters gave the book a really strong start and made me FALL IN LOVE with the world and the characters (SPECIFICALLY AUGUST BC HE’S A CINNAMON ROLL).

Me, looking at August like^

I thought that the way that the world was represented and the attitudes towards the monsters was really interesting. THE WORLD BUILDING WAS SO REAL AND I WANT IT TO BE A PLACE IRL. It was sort of futuristic?? And I really liked that because it wasn’t  WAYYYYYYY out of the possibilities, and it was more of an advanced world rather than so futuristic you couldn’t understand it.

dc705d6c2b57ba6cd57e4520474cb603--this-savage-song-savages.jpgBut in the beginning I was so angry at the world and felt so strongly about how everyone thought that August was a bad monster when yes, he’s not human and you know that from the get-go, but HE’S NOT A BAD MONSTER!!

It says in the blurb that he just wants to be human and WAAAAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE HIM. He’s such a deep character and he struggles with A LOT. And I just want to shout at the world until everyone loves him as much as I do.

  • Finally a book about friendships not romance!!!
  • characters that you want to hug.
  • baddies coming at you from no where.
  • murder. death. music.
  • parents who aren’t #chill but are super cool.
  • packed lunches.
  • parents that aren’t really parents and more like the devil incarnate.
  • fast pace amazingness that everyone needs to love.
  • violins.
  • Brilliant sisters.
  • really cool roads.
  • a city a bit like Berlin during the cold war. #divided.
  • Monsters flying about everywhere. not literally.

I think that another reason that I was able to be so consumed by the book was the MAGNIFICENT writing. V.E Schwab really has a way with words. I felt the same with A Darker Shade of Magic, and now again with This Savage Song. The way that she strings words together and makes these places so real is honestly amazing.

SO there are my thoughts on This Savage Song, CHAT WITH ME in the comments about what you thought!

gAH why didn’t I read this sooner?????

  1. Hi. Ok. I am reading this book currently. And I’m confused. Why can’t August play the instrument back at his apartment? Like this scene, where he is playing his violin in the school’s music room and it says “he finally completed the song after ages” I mean why? Why couldn’t he just play at home?? His siblings were Sinai so it wasn’t like they would get hurt by his music or smth

    1. Because there are still humans there, for example, his adopted parents, and the other members from the army (I cant remember the actual name of it) and also, it would mean exposing himself if any monsters heard it, and he’s meant to be kept a secret on that side of the city

ACKKKK you need you read it now! August is so easy to go and just fall in love with while Kate is a much more guarded character and does some. . . not nice things, shall we say that don’t paint her in the BEST light. I hope that you get to read it soon!

  4. Oh my god, I love how much love you have for this book! Your love and enthusiasm shine through your words! I’m so happy you enjoyed it as much as you did. Also, a book about friendship and not romance sounds amazing! I initially built my whole blog around romance and got so bored!

    1. Awww thank you so much, Jazz!! That’s so sweet!

omg yes!! It was so refreshing to read, and I feel like friendships are so overlooked in ya sometimes and some books are too dependent on romance to fill up the novel?

  6. I totally loved everything you mentioned about this book, but also how the monsters were original and not just vampires and werewolves. I thought it was super interesting to read about their origins, limitations and dynamics with each other. Such a great book!

  7. Haven’t read it yet Lu, but one day soon and I like your review it’s highlighted what to expect perfection and it’s also made me ten times more curious about this book. I’ve never read a V.E book so I can’t really comment on her writing skills, but I’ll take your words for it. And love the new designs, you are doing amazing sweetie.
