Goodbye 2017: My top reads of 2017 ft. dislikes, reading habits & events + general panic.

The fact that 2017 is coming to a close is making me flail around more than usual. This is not without due cause, and, no, I’m not “exaggerating”, or whatever non-booky-people call us.

Reasons for my flailing: 1) I realise how many books that I DIDN’T READ and now I’m a bad bookworm 2) I have to get teh top ten books that I read this year for this post and I’M TOO INDECISIVE OK??!?! 3) I’m panicking because in 2018 there are gonna be so many new BRILLIANT books and I’m never going to catch up on reading books from 5 years ago, and NOW MY TBR WILL CRUSH ME, OKAY?* 4) What if I read a book between now and the end of the year and then can’t add it to my list???

please can I just rgbkdgdngjdgndljngd have unlimited reading time???

Guys, I’m not panicking. I’m not. You are. GUYS STOP MAKING ME PANIC. I’M NOT PANICKING OKAY?Someone hand me cake I need to stop panicking.

Before I just flail into the pile of books that I read this year, lemme first talk about my crazy reading habits this year.

*like, for real now. . . SMOL LIST ABOUT MY READING HABITS.IMG

  • I went off contemporary. Mate, I WANTED TO BURN THAT GENRE.
  • I’m now reading the genre again. . . but I’m extremely picky.
  • I know I need to just pick whether I like it or not!!!!
  • I WONT.
  • I read more sci-fi! By this I literally mean I read Illuminae and Gemina. WHOA. OBSIDIO COME HITHER. oh oh oh and WARCROSS.
  • I READ POETRY. RHGESG I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
  • I finally read books by V.E SCHWAB!!!!! Truth is, I got This Savage Song, ADSOM and AGOS last Christmas. YEP. A YEAR A GO. And I didn’t start them until AUGUST THIS YEAR. And I still haven’t finished AGOS. . . I know. I actually suck at reading. The longest book that I read was 864 pages. Actually, it was 3857632563 pages.
  • I read some ARCS. yay.
  • MAGGIE STEIFVATER TOOK MY HEART AND SOUL AND GAVE IT TO GANSEY. (I love the others. But. GANSEY. PLEASE. HE’S PRECIOUS.) KRHBDGHDFJBGFDB THE RAVEN KING. I’M NEARLY FINISHED. I NEARLY AM, I PROMISE.IMG_1882

MY TOP TEN READS OF THIS YEAR

I know what you’re thinking, but let me explain:

(by the way these aren’t in any order whatsoever!)

  • Gemina / lluminae: these two go together, but out of the two, I have to say that Gemina was my favourite because there were more feels, I felt more heart break, and I felt that the world building was so much stronger in this book. Also Nik. I fell in love with him so fast because go how much he loveeeeed her and it was so cute and he’s so smol.
  • Our Dark Duet / This Savage Song: again, ODD has to be my favourite because YES, TSS blew me away, but ODD shattered me into a million grains of sand and then scattered me across the world. I just felt so much pain in the second book, I loved it.
  • Eliza and Her Monsters: I know what you’re thinking: “OMG A CONTEMPORARY??” but yes. a contemporary. I loved this book so much. I wasn’t blown away, but it still made my heart ache and there were so many fuzzy feeling moments and it wasn’t filled with drama and pettiness and was generally lovely.
  • ACOMAF: I think that if I read it now, I wouldn’t like it to the extent that I did before, but at the time of reading it, I was absolutely dumbfounded and this book captivated me for the entire reading experience and I reread it over and over. And because of the love that I had for it before, I couldn’t not include it here.
  • THE RAVEN BOYS!!!!!!!! (books 1-3): this series. MY NEW FAVOURITE. Honestly. The first book, was nothing. LITERALLY. THIS SERIES HAS TAKEN SUCH A TURN. I DID NOT EXPECT THIS. AND I LOVE IT TO PIECES. I’m currently reading the last instalment *sobs* and I’m crying on every other page, both happy and sad crying. And I just don’t want it to end.
  • Lady Midnight: Yes, I’m ashamed at me too. I just want to sob and eat cake because WHAT WAS I DOING not reading this last year?? I BOUGHT IT LAST YEAR. I JUST NEVER PICKED IT UP??!?!? WHY?!?!? IDK. But it killed me, shoved Cortana through my heart and left me to burn in the sun, because yes, I am a vampire. AND OMG LOS IS DARK ALREADY (currently reading it because I’m really behind okay???!?! *takes a deep breath*
  • Starfish: this book was so sweet, but tackled so many stereotypes at the same time, and had a lovely message!! I just adored it, even if the romance was a little fast.
  • Warcross: magnificent. That’s all I can say.
  • Outlander: rjgbukdfgbdjgnkr all the feels!!!!!!!! JAMIE!!!!!!!! I adore Scotland so much. I can’t even begin. This was the largest book that I read, and before, it had intimidated me sooooo much!! And, now, The next book is even longer (1200pg) and I’m scaredddddddd. . . *runs away*
  • And number ten is. . .  *RUNS AWAY!!* Guys I seriously cannot pick. this is too difficult. I’m going to keep this spot open because WHAT IF I FINISH A BOOK AND THEN REALLY LOVE IT MORE THAN A BOOK ALREADY ON THIS LIST??? SO I’LL JUST LEAVE THIS ONE EMPTY JUST IN CASE. YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING. I’M NOT PANICKED, STOP SAYING THAT!!!IMG_1882

SOME BOOKS THAT I DIDN’T GET TO READING

. . . just. . . a. . .  few. . .

I own about 4 of these. . . so it’s okay???

. . . there are probably loads more too. . .

I’M NOT PANICKING.

SOME OF THE BOOKS THAT I DIDN’T LIKE THIS YEAR

I DNF’ed one book: When Dimple Met Rishi.

I felt that both Percy Jackson and One Memory were a little meh. . .

And I thought that Traitor To The Throne was slow for the majority of the book and only really kicked off right at the end.

LIFE STUFF / EVENTS

Soooo many of you may not know this, but yes I have a life outside of blogging. I KNOW. MIND BLOWN. As much as I say “books are my entire life, blogging is my entire life,” other things do go on in my life.

  1. That’s the funniest thing I’ve ever read online. ‘a bad bookworm’. I may just be a weirdo and find that comment hysterical. Also I swooned over the raven boys series.

  2. No stop, don’t make me look at that list of books you haven’t read because I have read a grand total of two books on that list despite most of them being on my tbr. I am just shrieking because no matter how many books I read the rest of them will still be there staring at me with their judging eyes. And I know I’m not going to have much time to read next year because it’s my last year of school but shhhhhhhh I will find a way.

  3. Daughter of the Pirate King = LOVE.
READ THAT. NOW. I love the bad-ass sass.

Also, WARCROSS-LOVE. I always stayed clear of anything scifi-related – books, movies, series, anything. Illuminae pretty much changed that, haha. Can’t waaaait for Obsidio! I need that book! And I want MORE AIDAN.

ACOMAF = love. Paint and soup is all we need.

They Both Die At The End had me crying so hard. I hope it makes you cry as well.
Then we can be messy people together. Whoop!

Good luck with your DeLuWriMo & JaLuWriMo! 😀

  5. I’m not really a contemporary fan, but I loved Eliza and Her Monsters. It was so warm & fuzzy, and I just adored Eliza’s family & Eliza.
I just finished The Hate U Give & I have just one more book to finish my Goodreads challenge!!!

Ugh, tearing a ligament in your hand is so terrible. I bought an Apple Watch and wore it for 3 days. But it strained my wrist so badly, I had to return it. And I wore a wrist guard for nearly 2 weeks, it hurt so bad! I couldn’t type or do anything with my hand, agh…..it was very annoying. All because I really, really wanted an Apple watch. 😦

I haven’t read Maggie Stiefvater yet but I hope to in 2018!

oHHH IT WASSS!!!! OH my gosh HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??? That sounds awfullll ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU MUST. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the raven boys. I only read it until this year and oh my it’s blown everything out of the water this year and I think that it’s pretty much equal to my love for shadow hunters and THAT IS SOMETHING!!

      1. You’ve so convinced me to read the Raven Boys! It’s like the top of my 2018 tbr.

So, not sure, but I think the weight of the Apple watch just killed my wrist? I have hyper flexible elbows that pop out of joint ALL the TIME. So, then m wrist just gets out of whack. But the watch just HURT it.
And if I was smart, I’d sue Apple, haha! But I’m too lazy to do that. And I like Apple, and I really, really wish I could wear the apple watch without it hurting.

  6. agahgha I really hope you love PJO as it goes on, because it’s truly one of my favorite series!! (altho I read it when I was younger, so that may be why.) and YESSSS Illuminae, ODD, and Eliza were favorites of mine as well! I also loved ACOL, and as I’m rereading SoC and CK as well, I have to say those are my favorites for this year as well. 😉 And I might’ve added Starfish & Warcross to my favorites list, but I’ve heard some things with the abuse rep in Starfish & I admit there are a WHOLE lot of flaws in Warcross soooooo. and JLDAJF;DA I need to read Wonder Woman, Dear Martin, Radio Silence, TBDATE, and All the Crooked Saints in 2018! I THINK I’m getting Wild Beauty from a blogger gift exchange I did. I mean, she’s been promising to mail me it since forever and if she didn’t, I’m GOING TO RIOT.

Hope you have an amazing 2018, Lu!! ❤

Yesss I DIDN’T like some parts of Warcross, eg the lack of development of side characters 😦

rgkjrngjkrg I HOPE THAT YOU GET WILD BEAUTY (and the others!!) AND REALLY ENJOY THEM!!

Thank youuuuuuuu, have a great year too Mayyyy ❤ ❤

  7. If the books you read this year are any indication it seems you had an incredible 2017 Lu! I am so glad to see you are enjoying V.E. Schwab’s books, she’s one of my all-time favourite authors and her Shades of Magic series is one of my all-time favourite series. Also I didn’t read them this year but if I had Gemina and Illuminae would be on my top ten reads of the year for sure, they’re just incredible books and I cannot wait for Obsidio! 😀
It seems like you have some incredible books planned for 2018, I really hope you enjoy all of them, you have some of my favourites on there so I’ll be looking forwards to seeing what you think of them! 🙂
Great post, and I hope you have a great end of the year as well! 😀 ❤

If im honest, I’m not loving the Darker Shade of Magic series that much??? I much prefer the monsters of verity!

      OBSIDIO!! OBSIDIO!!!!!!!

      TNGJKTNGKJRG

Thank you so much!! I hope that I get to them soon!!!

  8. Curious as to why you feel you wouldn’t like ACOWAF as much now? Also, i totallllly understand the feeling of being a “bad bookworm.” This has definitely not been my best reading year. The rate that I add books to my TBR and my rate of actually reading books is very disproportionate and stressful. Here’s to 2018 being a better reading year for the both of us!

    1. Ahhh see I’ve just looked into the books more and I agree with that people say about how they find that Mass over sexualises characters etc, but IDK, id have to reread it to see whether or not I still like it or not.
omg sameeeeee I add 25x more to my tbr than I actually read ahha!!
I hope that you have a great holiday and a great 2018!!

  9. Oh yes, Eliza and Her Monsters was one of my favourites this year, and Illuminae was too I think!
And The Monsters of Verity… I just finished Our Dark Duet a couple days ago, and I don’t think I’m ever going to recover, and I just want to screech about it, and AKASHDKGFKJFGHKJFGKJGFJKFJF!!!!!!!
Sorry… I think I just needed to get that out of my system…
I also really loved Renegades… I know not everyone agrees with me on that, but I think it’s amazing, and definitely worth reading.
