I was apprehensive about all these books for no reason.
These are all now books that I HOLD SO CLOSE TO MY HEART I can’t even explain how much I love them. I was bascailly being a big idiot. Well no.. I had genuine fears of ‘oh NO what if I hate the writing style’ (lol illuminae) or ‘oh no what if I don’t like the fantasy/world building’ ‘oh no I’ve heard this series is slow’ ETC. All these fears bascially lead me to get to the state that I’m in now where it’s Impluse-Buys or No-Buys.
I get very click-happy on amazon. I wish I could call that an issue. But I can’t. I love it.
ANWAYS. These books. yes. Ok I’m just going to start writing this post. (maybe after a cup of tea).
- college is currently (still) killing me.
- I’ve actually been reading books!!
1. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of The Universe.
I wanted to read this book for YEARS. But I put it off. And then I put it off some more. Why? I have no idea.
I don’t know what it was, I just COULD NOT bring myself to buy it. I HAVE NO IDEA WHY BECAUSE THIS WAS AMAZING AND IT WAS MY FRIST READ OF THE YEAR AND IT NOW OWNS MY HEART + SOUL, NO ARGUMENT FROM ME.
This book was legitimately everything ever and was perfect and I will love it forever. Don’t even try @ me on this.
2. Carry On
So I heard about this BEAUT YEARS AGO but I never really acknowledged it? I was NOT a huge fantasy fan at that time, and even though I’d read Fangirl and that-girl-and-park this book just didn’t… i dont even know??? I wanted to read it… but I didn’t want to at the same time. Then I just forogt about it.
Lots of people said that it was like Harry Potter… but??? I didn’t see those reviews until I was writing my own ahaha. AND I don’t think that it’s like Harry Potter at all ahaha.
I finally read it last year and I’ve already read this over and over again, maybe 5/6 times???? and omg I adore this book so much. It’s the opitome of british humour and wit and SCONES-galore. totally totally recommend it.
WHILE IT WAS AN OK BOOK: IT’S FILLED WITH BI-ERASURE AND RAINBOW ROWELL IS AN AUTHOR THAT I CANNOT SUPPORT. ELEANOR AND PARK: RACISM. CARRY ON: BI-ERASURE.
3. Illuminae / Obsidio
I was so so so anxious about reading Illuminae because of the style that it’s told in. I was like ‘oh no what if I don’t understand it’ ‘oh no what if it’s too cryptic’ AND i just hadn’t read Sci-fi before.
But then I LOVED IT, especially Gemina. BUT then I read all the hype about OBSIDIO and PANICKED. Because what if I hated the last one? What if it didn’t live up to my expectations? BUT THEN I JUST READ IT ANYWAY.
I really want to reread this series again this year, or at least the first two!!
5. This Savage Song
I don’t even know about this one. I got it for christmas in 2017 and gobbled it up stright away. It was love at first page. I just couldn’t keep my grubby paws off of it.
I think it was because I hadn’t read ADOM yet?? and I really hadn’t like it at that time? (this was when I read the first 80 pages of ADOM and then dnf’ed it, and NOW THAT I’VE READ ADOM I loved it. AGOS was another book that I was skeptical about because of my history with ADOM (lol sounds like a relationship)). BUT TSS was SOO different and I don’t know why I didn’t want to read it, I was just IDEK.
6. Six of Crows
This got SO popular the SECOND it was released. I read it as part of a book group from my bookstagram and I didn’t actually LIKE-IT LIKE-IT until I was maybe half way through? I can’t really remember. I don’t know why.
KAZ THO. JESPER THO.
WYLAN THO. WYLAN MOST OF ALL.
The characters 11/10 made this book and jetgndrgjkdjkn. hte plot REALLY kicked off and then my love for this book (duology) became immortalised.
7. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
I saw the film first.
I KNOW, I KNOW. I’m terrible.
BUT THAT SET REALLY HIGH EXPECTATIONS. LIKE, REALLY. And then I finally read it and yeah… it lived up to the hype.. eventually. THE ENDING WAS GOOD, I LOVED IT. I WANTED TO CARRY ON, but I just felt that it took a little time to get there??? I don’t know.
CHARCTER DEVELOPMENT WAS EVERYWHERE. I LOVE PETER. I LOVE KITTY. I LOVE MR COVEY.
BUT YES, WILL BE CONTINUING WITH THE SERIES B/C I WANT TO SEE A HAPPY ENDING FOR PETER AND LARA-JEAN DON’T EVEN @ ME IF IT DOESN’T HAPPEN I WANT THEM TO BE TOGETHER, IF THEY’RE NOT BY THE END OF THE SERIES I WILL BE PROTESTING AND DESTROY EVERYHTING EVER AND PROMPTLY EAT 100000 CAKES TO TRY AND SAVE MY SOUL, OK?
8. The City of Bones
GHHHAAASP. I know. this is a shock, considering that I LITERALLY SCREAM ABOUT THEM ALL THE TIME BUT…. i only heard of the books because of the MOVIE that came out. YES I KNOW. (the movie is 10000x better than the show don’t @ me) and I HADN’T READ FANTASY BEFORE.
FUTURE ME: WHILE I LIKED THESE BOOKS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, THIS SERIES IS FILLED WITH HARMFUL STEREOTYPES AND MESSAGES THAT I CANNOT SUPPORT. CASSANDRA CLARE IS ALSO AN AUTHOR THAT I NO LONGER SUPPORT.
Whate are some of the books you didn’t think would live up to the hype but did? are any of these on your list too? LET ME KNOW?

I agree with all your choices, really!
Six of Crows was definitely one I was not anticipating to love as much. I mean, it’s a veryyyyy hyped book, but I am the queen of unpopular opinions after all, so I had the feeling I could hate it as well. And even though I still have some minor unpopular opinions towards the series – like the fact I really can’t stand Kaz lol -, I think it’s 100% deserving of the hype.
And I’m so glad you enjoyed Ari & Dante! It’s my favorite book of all times and I also re-read it this past month. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful and queer and I love it a lot, hahah.

These are of course all amazing books which lived up to the hype for me too. 🙂 I picked up Illuminae shortly after it’s release but there was a huge amount of pre-release hype which I was aware of, and which of course ended up being well deserved (I ended up fully hyping up Gemini and Obsidio).
The main book I think of when I think of what lived up to the hype for me was The Bear and the Nightingale. Everyone was talking about it and loving it, and I went in with high hopes anyways but I was completely blown away by the story. It was just incredible.
Great post Lu, and hopefully there’ll be plenty more hyped books you’ll end up loving still to be read. 🙂 ❤️

I also was worried Six of Crows would not live up to the hype and put off reading it for a long time. I was WRONG! But I also got to read both books in a row instead of waiting, so maybe I win.

That’s what everyone seems to be saying lol. I think it’s because it’s SO different to SO many books?????? Yeah I literally did the same thing, I didn’t have to wait or anything it was greatttt haha

I just didn’t love the first Grisha trilogy, so that also made me worried Six of Crows was being overhyped, but it’s so much better!
