8 Reasons To Read Letters To The Lost Review | More Contemporary Books + Messy Mumbles.

So today I’ve done 5+ish hours of revision, got so exhausted my eyes are puffy and blurry and just as an extra lil‘ bonus, I’m starting to get a cold. This is fantastic because 1) I’m about to freeze my ass off in a cold hall and sit 17 exams, 2) runny noses. . . fab, 3) I totally deserve this punishment.

Anyways, I’m kind of in the mood for ranting, kind of not.

SO HERE’S A REVIEW???

*pfft, I so am.

I wrote a whole full-length review thing on my Goodreads which you can read here as this review will be in a new format that I haven’t REALLY used before!

I read Letters To The Lost a while ago, well. . . November time and read it in a day, which LITERALLY NEVER HAPPENS*  and well. . . I thought I’d share it here too**

*ok, it happened twice that week. . . **i.e I didn’t know what else to post. . .

    • The Letters: I adored the letters and their meaning. This book focussed so much on the feelings of losing a loved one, HENCE THE TITLE, but like. . . it was so thoughtful and BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN. I loved the letters between Declan and Juliet — eventually. At first, I didn’t really like Juliet’s anger towards Declan’s first reply, as I thought that it was hypocritical as she accused him of having no idea what she was going through and just assuming, whereas she didn’t really consider what HE could have been going through?? However, it developed nicely.
    • Realistic Friendships!!!: DECLAN’S BEST FRIEND!!! REV!!!!!! SMOLLEST CREATURE!! He was like Yoda. . . but boxer size. I WANT MORE FROM REV!!!! He’s getting a separate book??? And!!!!!! Juliet’s best friend!! ROWAN!!!! OMG guysssssss!!!!! This book had a really REALISTIC F/F friendship where there was COMMUNICATION, (MINI)BOY DRAMA, SQUIBBLES, but guess what IT WAS REAL.
    • DECLAN: he gave that stereotypical bad boy vibe with the “TROUBLED PAST” thing going on too, BUT girls didn’t swoon over him endlessly and weren’t obsessing over him. He wasn’t popular and was actually quite judged, BUT IT ALL WORKED. The stereotype was completely shaken about because really, HE’S JUST AN EMOTIONAL GUY/MESS.
    • His Development: Okay, THIS IS TOTALLY WORTHY OF A WHOLE BULLET POINT. There’s this moment when he realises something, I was so scared that he was gonna do a bad thing because he was soo emotionally stressed, but then he did the RIGHT thing and I was like: yes!!! This!! Is!! Declan!! People!! Stop!! Assuming!! He’s!! Bad!! (even I need to bc development!!)
  • IMG_1882
    • JULIET: I mentioned above that she was a tad hypocritical at the start for me, and I think that she made AWESOME character development. I nearly forgot about being a bit annoyed at the beginning. And!!! In the beginning, I feel like she was overly harsh on her dad (who’s actually a cinnamon roll) BUT AGAIN!! DEVELOPMENT!! (More like PLOT TWIST!!!)
    • Them: I love how they got to know each other NOT KNOWING who each other were and KNOWING who each other were. (THIS MAKES NO SENSE, but it does if you’ve read the book!) I WANT SOMEONE TO WRITE ME LETTERS. LIKE. The relationship via letters I think went a bit fast?? They got attached really quickly, I mean anyone would if they were sharing ALL THAT with someone! And the relationship (irl) they had moments where they really got along and!! dgkbdsgb!! cute!!
    • THE PLOT TWIST: LIKE WHOA. *MORE THAN A MILD SHOCK* I did not see that coming. I think that it really changed Juliet’s perspective on a LOT. Buuutttt she acted a bit rash. . . That was a bit shitty.
    • The Messages!: A lot of the book was based on photography, which introduced the key theme of a “snapshot of people’s lives” that people see. With Declan, people judge his past. Juliet get’s judged on her mother’s death. And Juliet, she judged her mother based on the photos that she took for her occupation, but I don’t think that she REALLY knew her mother. And both Juliet and Declan judged each other in real life, as they didn’t get along at first because they were subconsciously judging each other on things that they’d heard about each other. Like, don’t judge.

I’ve been reading more and more contemporary books lately??? I’ve really loved them too!! For example:

You can read my review for Eliza and Her Monsters here, Release here and Starfish here!

I’d love to read some MORE contemporaries, such as:

chat with me

Have you read Letters to the Lost? What did you think? Have you read any of the ones on my TBR? What contemporaries have you been reading lately?? Do you mainly read contemporaries? Let me know!

  1. I’m BAAA-HAAAACK with a long-ass comment.

Okay. This really sounds like a book that I have to get my hands on and read. Now.
But; yeah, it’ll have to wait, haha. I just ordered nine books or something like that and bought like another nine at a book fair and.. Someone stop me?

    ANYWAY.
Eliza and her Monsters is on my wishlist as well. [I need a bookish fairy godmother. Any candidates here?] Same as Dear Martin. A friend has been going on about Starfish, so that one too?
Alex, Approximately is ALSO one I NEED to read!

Okay, let’s just admit that They Both Die At The End is the only one on your list that I actually read and I cried like a baby.
Even though I knew how it was going to end. I was a blubbering, snotty mess and my boyfriend made fun of me which made me throw his stupid book with scientific facts [SORRY NOT SORRY] at his head.

~ I sincerely hoped that last part made you at least laugh a little bit. Don’t forget to smile; do fun stuff and not stress about exams too much! Good luck, girl!

SAME. I seriously do need a bookish fairy godmother. But don’t we all..

Make sure to have some glue around so you can glue yourself back together! You’ll be smashed. Destroyed. Cracked everywhere!

        Thank YOUUU.!

              1. They’ve arrived in the last couple of days! Even my christmas gift from a fellow blogger which had like THREE BOOKS IN IT. Best Christmas ever – no doubt.

I KNOW RIGHT. Serial killer number one: BOOKS. And don’t let the whole freaking government tell you differently.

  2. I totally agree with that plot twist!! It was such a WHOA OK THEN moment for me. I think Juliet’s reaction was justified…kinda. I guess it’s just hard to make a reaction for such a plot twist!
Yesss I thought that she was being too harsh on her Dad as well! I felt so bad for him throughout the majority of the book, it was just so unnecessary how she treated him sometimes😭
Declan. AHHH LOVED HIM. And Rev!! And Rowan!! You’re making me want to read it again😂

    1. OMG YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah her reaction was justified but i think that it was still a bit hypocrytical too???

  4. Well, I guess there’s another book that flops onto my TBR pile which I might manage to get round to in 2050 when I have some time on my hands😂😂

  5. I haven’t read Letters to the Lost, or even heard much about it, but your review has made me want to add it to my to-read list right away because this sounds like it has everything I love about contemporary books in it; great character development, great f/f friendship (because we need loads more real and wonderfully development f/f friendships in YA books right?) and a sweet romance. Basically this is a book I need to read myself now! 😀
Also, can’t say I’m the best person to give advice on contemporary reads (much more of a fantasy reader) but definitely DEFINITELY pick up They Both Die at the End Lu. It’s such an incredible book and yes it will completely break your heart but it’s such an amazing story at the same time. 🙂
Great review, and happy reading! 😀 ❤
