THREE MINI REVIEWS | BOOKS THAT SMUHSED MY HEART. (WAAAAA (!!) + A BIT OF DISAPPOINTMENT. . . )

580002PERCY JACKSON AND THE SEA OF MONSTERS.

Rating: 3/5 stars.

I’m just not falling in love with these books. After previously marking this book as ‘DNF’ not too long ago, I decided to give this book another chance, like I did with the first book. I was surprised by the fact that by the time I got to the end, I was actually starting to enjoy it, and then IT ENDED.

My main thought throughout this book was: SO. SLOW. Literally, they just dawdled for 3/4 of the book and nothing really happened??? Another main thought: the childish speech of the characters annoyed me easily, despite that I KNOW it’s meant for younger people. I get that this book is middle grade, but it still bothered me. (hope the characters mature in the next books. )

I like the writing style, and the funny lines, there’s a lot of wit and it made me laugh a few times, and I nearly cried at some parts. . . I know, I’m an emotionless monster. . .

I was super happy with the ending, it was really good. Not everything was “yay we saved the world! Now let’s go eat cake!!” and was genuinely a refreshing ending. I actually really like how in these books NOTHING ever goes to plan and EVERYTHING FAILS . It’s quite relatable as a teenager (not because I too am a half blood that fights monsters,) because as a teenager not everything always goes to plan and yeah, that’s nice to see.

There were LOTS OF STABBY-STABBY and FIGHTY-FIGHTY scenes and that means a VERY happy me. Honestly, I think that’s what I love most about Rick Riordan’s writing the most, he can write a ugh scene, and IT MAKES SENSE TO ME. I actually want to read the next book. I’m not in love with the series yet, but I like them so far.

Rating: 5/5 stars.

This poetry book is so full of emotion, (well done my. . . ALL POETRY IS!), I think that I need to recover for 643705848376832 years, k?
After seeing this agessss ago, I sort of forgot it was on my TBR then I saw it in Urban Outfitters, of all places I KNOW, and then someone on the internet *cough cough ilsa* screamed at me to read it. AND OMG AM I GLAD THAT I DID.

so many unicorns.
so many dragons.
so much autumn.
so much amazingness YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. . . (unless you’ve read it too)

This is about self-love and I just. This is what I needed. recently I’ve been having a not so great time with all that jazz and reading this just struck a cord and idhbvekervkjnveabrufhjs,hjvs,jehrgvjhresg I’ve forgotten words. Nothing I’d be able to say is as beautiful as the words in this book.

It was so beautiful and I just want moreeeeeeeeeee. but at the same time I really loved having the four parts, and the short poems because I feel the with poetry so much can be said in so little words and it enables you to connect with the poem through your own interpretation and krgbesvlb these poems are just amazing and I think that this anthology of poems should be read by everyone because it was literally breathtaking.

Rating: 4/5 stars.

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK BY PATRICK NESS THAT I’VE READ SO FAR.

It wasn’t what I thought that it would be AT ALL. It was absolutely wonderful. I was interested from the very beginning and was hooked from day one. It’s in a beautiful 3rd person narrative, but still has an extremely personal narrative that helps you connect to Seth (the MC) almost straight away. It really helped build his character, however, I feel that the book was very word-y at the beginning and could have cut a few bits out.

The crazy, unique world that the book was set in also puzzled me and really made the book all the more dark and menacing. It added an element of darkness that I ADORE. As well as this, it made a real juxtaposition between the present and the memories that Seth was remembering for his life, and really added emotion and thought, making me feel truly empathetic towards him. 1 Bouquet

There was a real futuristic vibe to the book that made it seem more sci-fi then it already was, and there was a lot of moments where I questioned whether it was a fantasy or sci-fi. I CAN NEVER TELL BOOK GENRES. I SUCK.

* GOOD writing style.
* The split between present and past.
* The air of mystery.
* The sci-fi element.
* The world building
* The diversity!
* The build up of empathy for Seth. We basically shared a heart by the end of the book.

* Writing was a bit blabby at the beginning.
* There were a few times when literally nothing was happening.
* I would have liked for the plot to get going a lot earlier. Yes, I was engaged, but I think that the plot could have moved along faster.

        I haven’t read the Apollo books yet… And I’m not sure I ever will. I feel like I’ve kind of outgrown Percy Jackson? Maybe? I might give it a try sometime, though, just in case!
